The 3-in-1 soil tester is a device for simultaneously measuring pH, soil moisture, and soil sunlight exposure, making it very useful for growing many types of plants. Knowing the soil parameters greatly facilitates planning and, later, maintaining optimal conditions for our crops. As a result, we can act more consciously and achieve satisfying yields. The pH meter allows for an accurate assessment of soil condition by clearly indicating its status. This is useful when we want to grow fruit and vegetables successfully. The device does not require batteries and provides an unlimited number of measurements without incurring additional costs. Plants should be watered only when the meter’s readings are lower than recommended.
Knowledge of the soil facilitates planning and then maintaining the appropriate conditions for a given crop. We are able to act consciously and achieve satisfactory yields. After each use, the meter should be wiped with a cloth.
Measuring moisture:
Set the switch to the "moist" position on the left. Place the meter in the soil, inserting it to a depth of 5–10 cm—do this gently so as not to damage the plant roots or the meter—the sensor is located at the tips of the prongs. The reading is displayed immediately. Possible results:
- 1–3 dry,
- 4–7 neutral,
- 8–10 wet.
pH measurement:
Set the switch to the "pH" position on the right. It is best to prepare a soil sample; to ensure the test is reliable, take samples from several locations. For every 100 m² of land, take at least 3–4 soil samples from a depth of about 20 cm. You can prepare it in a jar. It is recommended to completely remove roots, stones, etc. Then pour in a small amount of water so that the soil is moist. Gently insert the probes and wait for the measurement. The reading will be reliable after one minute. Possible results:
- 3.5–6 acidic,
- 7 neutral,
- 7–8 alkaline.
Depending on the reading, it may be necessary to acidify the soil—lower the pH—or alkalize it—raise the pH—so that it meets the plants’ requirements.
To raise the pH, use calcium fertilizers, which will supply calcium to the plants and regulate the soil’s pH. To lower the pH, acidify the soil using, for example, an acidifying fertilizer.
Examples of trees and shrubs that prefer a given pH level:
- <4.5 very acidic – blueberry, cranberry,
- 4.6–5.5 acidic – raspberry, gooseberry, azalea, rhododendron, hydrangea,
- 5.6–6.5 slightly acidic – apple, pear, currant, rose, magnolia,
- 6.6–7.2 neutral – sweet cherry, sour cherry, plum, apricot, peach.
examples of soil pH for vegetables:
- broad beans 6.2–7.0,
- broccoli 5.5–6.8,
- onion 5.8–6.5,
- beans 6.0–7.0,
- white cabbage 6.2–7.7,
- Napa cabbage 6.2–7.0,
- savoy cabbage 6.2–7.0,
- dill 5.5–6.5,
- carrots 6.0–6.5,
- cucumber 6.5–7.0,
- parsley 5.6–6.5,
- tomato 5.5–6.5,
- radish 6.0–7.0,
- potato 5.0–6.0.
Sunlight:
Set the switch to the "light" position—in the middle. Point the light sensor toward the light source, and the light intensity level will appear on the scale. Possible results:
- 0–500 low,
- 1000–2000 high.
